Fans watched a generational receiver get shipped out of Houston overnight. The deandre hopkins trade left fantasy rosters in chaos and the Texans scrambling for answers. This complete guide breaks down every detail of the deandre hopkins trade — from contract numbers to on-field production — so you understand the full picture and what it means going forward.
The DeAndre Hopkins Trade That Shook the NFL
On March 16, 2020, the Houston Texans sent their best player to the Arizona Cardinals. The deandre hopkins trade stunned fans, analysts, and players across the league. Houston received running back David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2021 fourth-round pick in return (NFL.com, 2020).
Most observers called the deandre hopkins trade a massive win for Arizona. The Cardinals landed a top-three receiver at a fraction of his true market value. Houston, meanwhile, faced immediate backlash from fans and media alike.
DeAndre Hopkins Contract Details After the Trade
The deandre hopkins contract became a central talking point right after the deal. Arizona inherited the remaining years of his extension, which paid him roughly $27.5 million per season. That number ranked among the highest for any wide receiver at the time (ESPN, 2020).
By 2022, the Cardinals restructured the deandre hopkins contract to create salary cap space. The restructure converted base salary into a signing bonus and pushed dead money into future seasons. This move gave Arizona short-term flexibility but created long-term financial headaches.
Why the Texans Pushed the DeAndre Hopkins Trade
Houston’s front office pointed to salary cap constraints as the primary reason. The deandre hopkins trade freed up immediate cap room for a roster that needed upgrades across the board. Team ownership also reportedly wanted to move on from large guaranteed contracts.
Critics argued the deandre hopkins trade sacrificed on-field production for short-term financial relief. David Johnson never replicated his early-career form in Houston. The draft picks acquired also failed to produce impact starters for the Texans.
DeAndre Hopkins Fantasy Value Before and After the Trade
The deandre hopkins fantasy outlook shifted dramatically after the move to Arizona. In Houston, he consistently posted 1,000+ receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns. Fantasy managers drafted him as a top-five wide receiver every single season.
After the deandre hopkins trade, his production dipped slightly due to quarterback inconsistency. Kyler Murray’s injuries in 2022 limited Hopkins to just nine games. Still, when healthy, the deandre hopkins fantasy ceiling remained elite — he averaged over 100 yards per game during active stretches.
DeAndre Hopkins Age and Career Timeline
Understanding the deandre hopkins age helps put his career arc in perspective. Born on June 6, 1992, he entered the NFL as the 27th overall pick in the 2013 draft. Clemson produced one of the most reliable receivers of his generation.
At the time of the original deandre hopkins trade, he was 27 years old and entering his physical prime. His route-running precision and contested-catch ability showed no signs of decline. Those traits made the deandre hopkins trade even more puzzling to outside observers.
